Working right now on the photos for the Regional Championship Track & Field Championship between the high schools in the Greater Spokane League (GSL) and the Mid-Columbia Conference (MCC).

I took just over 6,300 photos but after removing bad, blurry, and redundant photos, I hope to end up with 5,000 keepers. I will add the photos to the 2013 GSL/MCC 3A/4A Regional Track & Field Gallery at my Sports Photography Collection as I get them processed.

3A/4A District 5 Championships This meet determines which athletes from the 3A & 4A schools of the Mid-Columbia Conference will move on to the GSL/MCC 3A/4A Regional Championship Meet next week in Spokane. Nine high schools were represented: Chiawana, Hanford, Kamiakin, Kennewick, Pasco, Richland, Southridge, and Walla Walla.

I took just over 3,000 photos but after removing bad, blurry, and redundant photos, I hope to end up with 2,000 keepers. I will add the photos to my Sports Photography Album as I get them processed.

Richland Twilight JV Champs

Richland Twilight JV Champs Canon repaired my 70-200m telephoto lens (for $360) and I was ready to go shoot a track meet. The last JV meet of the season, The Richland Twilight JV Champs with athletes from almost every southeastern Washington high school: Chiawana, Davis, Eastmont, Eisenhower, Hanford, Kamiakin, Kennewick, Moses Lake, Pasco, Richland, Southridge, Sunnyside, Walla Walla, and Wenatchee.

I ended up with a little over 2,000 photos. Hopefully most will be keepers. There were numerous heats of the various running events and I did not get photos of every heat. The distance races are easier because they can stack a lot of runners in each race as well as they provide a number of opportunities to get a shot of the runner. The dashes are difficult because you only get a few seconds to catch the runners and can usually only focus on 1 or 2 runners in each event.

Once again, I found myself not getting many photos of the field events. They are going on at the same time as the running events and are spread out over the area so it is hard to catch the athletes at the right time.

I will be adding the photos as I get them processed.

100, 200, & 400 Meter Dashes – Pasco Invite

The dashes are difficult to capture because not only are the runners fast but the distance is short. Maybe if I had a more powerful telephoto lens I could sit at the finish line and capture the runners as they approached. As it is, without my telephoto lens I was only able to capture wide angle shots as the runners went by.

110/100m & 300m Hurdles – 2013 Pasco Invite

With so much happening on the track as well as out in the field, catching photos of all the events at a track meet is difficult and of every athlete is impossible. The distance races give the photographer a couple of chances to capture each athlete but the dashes only give you one opportunity. The 100m dash allows you to shoot continuously as the athletes run by but the hurdles are much more difficult because if the athlete is not captured going over the hurdle is it a ‘hurdle’ photo?

I have tried photographing the athletes individually at the last set of hurdles and as a group coming over the first row hurdles. Since my telephoto lens was not working, the group shots ended up being my only viable option at the meet.
