All track running events now use ‘meters’ instead of yards. So you have the 100m dash, 200m dash, 1600m, 3200m, etc. But how do the elite high school athletes of today compare to those of the past? Since the Pasco Invite has attracted the top athletes in the northwest for the past 52 years, the Elite Mile event allows today’s top runners to see how they stack up against those of the past. Sixteen runners with the best times are invited to run the Elite Mile with the regular 1600 meter race available for the rest.

Pasco Invite

The Pasco Invite is said to be the largest single-day track meet in the country with 1400 athletes representing 100 schools in competition. I can say that it is quite an experience to try to see everything from field level. Pasco does a great job keeping things moving especially when they are alternating 100m dash & hurdle prelim races on opposite sides of the track.

Trying to get pictures of everything is impossible. I took over 4000 photos but did not get a single picture of the discus throwers or triple jump and only a few of the javelin and shot put. I also did not get too many photos of the dashes. The distance races are so much easier to capture photos of each runner and I probably show some favoritism there since that is why I started taking photos at the meets.

Congratulations to the Kamiakin Girls and the Wenatchee Boys for taking 1st place overall at the meet!

Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park

While visiting Florida we decided we wanted to visit the Gulf Coast and see some manatees.
From my reading, early morning is the best time to see these amazing creatures since they like to come in and warm themselves in the water warmed by hot springs.
We were not going to be able to get there early but it seemed that Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park would be our best chance to see the manatee plus the park showcases native Florida wildlife, including black bears, bobcats, white-tailed deer, American alligators, American crocodiles, river otters, flamingos, various raptors, and more.

Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park

We spent a few hours touring the park. I was able to get a number of photos of the various animals which I have uploaded to my photo website.
We were able to see a number of captive manatees that the park is rehabilitating for release back into the wild as well as a couple of wild manatees that wander into the park to enjoy the warm waters.
The park’s other inhabitants were also quite interesting.
We enjoyed our leisurely stroll through the park and would definitely recomend it anyone visiting the area.

Check out my photos from the Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park and let me know which are your favorite critters.

As part of their Kamiakin High School culminating project, Michelle Fletcher and Megan Beauchene organized a 5k run/walk. All proceeds from the event go to the local YMCA’s Girls on the Run Foundation, an after-school program that promotes healthy and active lifestyles for elementary age girls. Both Megan and Michelle are distance runners, running for Kamiakin’s cross country and track teams, making the YMCA’s program very appropriate.

To support Megan and Michelle, I volunteered to take some photos of the event that they can use when they present their culminating project. I figured it would help them out and would get me ready for track season since I have not taken any sports photos since the end of Cross Country season. Below are the photos I took and links to them at my portfolio site (GaryPaulson.net), Facebook (Facebook), and Google+ (Google+).

On Wednesday I attended and took photos of my first soccer game. It was quite a challenge!

Under the lights of the stadium I thought it would be similar to taking photos at a football game but it was quite different. In football, most of the time the game marches from one end of the field to the other so you can anticipate where the action will be headed and plan accordingly. With soccer the action moves back and forth constantly. I ended up just setting up in different positions and waiting for the action to come into range.

My poor little F/4.0 70-200 lens was pushed to the limit as is evident in the photos. I had to push the ISO to 1600 and shutter speed of 250 to get enough light for the photos. The high ISO meant lots of noise introduced into the photo and the low shutter speed meant that many photos have some motion blur. The F/2.8 lens would have allowed me to bump my speed up to 500 but would knock my wallet for a loop. I am just glad that Lightroom can do wonders with the raw images and pull out the details in the shadows.

I will have to try making it to a daytime game next time to see if I can get some better shots. Still, it was quite interesting to watch the game from the sideline and try to capture the action.

Just a quick reminder to set your camera clock back an hour from Daylight Saving Time. If you forget, all your pictures will be taken in the future.

I always forget to change the clock when I travel and cross a time zone. Not a big deal till you try to remember where a photo was taken. Especially critical if you use a GPS to geo-tag your photos.

While I am thinking about it, I finally found an android app that shows the clock ‘seconds’. This is important to me for 2 reasons. First, it allows me to sync the time on my two cameras easily so I can merge the photos sequentially, and second, the GPS data from my phone will sync exactly with the time on the photos.
