It is once again time for the Washington State Cross Country Championships at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco, Washington. I have received my media pass from the WIAA and am set to shoot some photos. With more than 10 races scheduled and about 160 runners in each race, it will be a busy day. Then another couple of busy days trying to get all the photos processed.

Saturday, October 27th, 2012 was the day when all cross country teams from Eastern Washington came together at Carmichael Middle School in Richland, WA to see which teams would move on to the state meet the following week.

I love this quote in the Tri-City Herald:

The [Kamiakin Girl's] win, however, did not come without an assist from the boys squad after one of the girls forgot her uniform top. Since every runner on a team has to be in the same uniform, the girls had to borrow the boys’ tops.

So, how was it getting your jersey back after it had traveled 3 miles on someone else’s back? Cold and clammy?

“They smelled gooood,” Kamiakin’s Austin Oser said with a grin.

I need to do a bit of a write up about the meet but for now I just wanted to make sure the links were up. The photos for the JV races should be up shortly.

These are some amazing shots. If you ever wonder how some of those sports photos are taken for magazines or ads — this video shows you the behind the scenes work it takes.

Maybe I should bring a ‘spritzer’ bottle to spray a bit more sweat on the cross country runners as they go by?

Saturday, October 6th, is the day for the 44th Annual Richland Cross Country Invitational. Looks like there will be over 50 high school teams from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and even British Columbia besides a number of middle schools. And I will be there photographing all the races.

There will be some exciting races, with nationally ranked runners and teams going head to head. The key match-up will be Andrew Gardner (US#7) running against Joe Hardy (US#8) and Kai Wilmot (US#15). On the girls side we have Alexa Efraimson (US#8) facing Katie Knight (US#12) as well as Jordan McPhee. On the team side, Kamiakin High (US#21) from Kennewick will do their best to outrun North Central (US#4) from Spokane.

I will update this post with some photos as soon as I get back from the race and will be uploading them to my 2012 Cross Country Photography gallery and to facebook.

Last year I saw in the Kennewick Community Education catalog that John Clement was going to teach aphotography class. A week later I decided to sign up for the class and found it was already full. When I saw the community education catalog in my email last month, I quickly checked and saw that John was going to be teaching a class, “The Secrets of Sunrise and Sunset Photography”. I did not procrastinate this time and signed up immediately.

Some of the most beautiful light for photography occurs during sunrise and sunset. Both of these times of day present their own challenges making it difficult to get just the right shot. John will discuss tools and techniques that you can use to take great pictures. He will also address how to integrate exposure, focus, and depth of field with the elements of composition while taking landscape photos. See stunning examples from John’s professional collection. This is a lecture/discussion format class with many examples!

John Clement

According to his website, www.johnclementgallery.com, John began his photography career in the mid-1970’s. He has received over 60 regional, national, and international awards for pictorial and commercial work. John’s photography has been exhibited in numerous galleries and art shows over the past 30 years. Four of his prints were accepted into the Washington State University Museum of Art in 1989. John has 17 murals of the Eastern Washington area installed in the Seattle Seahawk stadium and has had other corporate purchasers such as: Swedish Hospital, Battelle Research and Development, Murphey Favre Investment, Exxon Corporation, McGregor Co., Westinghouse, Lamb Weston. Dade Moeller & Associates. Presently, he has nine prints in the Professional Photographers of America permanent loan collection. One print, “Red Dawn,” was named one of the top photographs in the United States and was hung in the permanent collection of the International Hall of Fame of Photography. John co-published the books, “Palouse Country: A Land and Its People,” “The Wenatchee Valley and Its First Peoples,” and “Finding Chief Kamiakin,” with author Richard Scheuerman; John providing all the photography for the Palouse and Wenatchee regions. This past year John also released a coffee table collection of his work titled “Northwest Drylands-Seasons.”

John shared many of his secrets, including the ‘tools’ he uses to decide where and when to go to make his photos. He uses Intellicast.com to try to predict when the clouds will be forming in the sky to provide an interesting picture. When he said that a Delorme Atlas was one of his other primary tools I thought it was because he did not have a smart phone with Google Maps. But no, he showed how he makes notes in the atlas to show directions to shoot from, good locations to shoot from, and light direction. He also likes to view the state road webcams to see what weather conditions look like in an area before driving long distances.

The major lesson I took away was where to point my camera. I noticed when John was showing us how to read the weather map he seemed to be getting it backwards, when the clouds were to the west he mentioned it would be a good morning shot and when the clouds were in the east it would be a good time to go out at sunset. Usually when you go out at sunrise or sunset you would think to point the camera towards the gorgeous horizon. John uses the rising and setting sun to light the subjects of his photos rather than trying to capture the sunrise and sunset. As he explained, if you shoot into the light then everything else is in shadows or silhouetted, with your back to the sun you have gorgeous light highlighting everything.

I was in Costco last night and saw that they have a new tripod available. Instead of the Sunpack tripod they have been carrying for quite some time they now have a Manfrotto MK294 tripod plus 3-way head and two quick release plates. MB MBAG70N Tripod Bag
The MB MBAG70N Tripod Bag is an unpadded ballistic nylon bag designed to carry Manfrotto tripods with head up to 27″ long. The end cap is padded to offer protection to the tripod head. The zipper extends down the length of the bag, but also fully opens the top end of the bag. The end opening allows for faster “quiver” style extraction and insertion of the tripod.  Tripod legs fit comfortably in the narrower end and extra space is allowed for the larger volume of the head at the wider end. This also means it’s easier to put the tripod and head in the bag, even if the head levers and knobs are fitted and jut out slightly. The bag includes a shoulder strap. Perfect for travel.

Bag Features:

  • Ballistic nylon for durability
  • End cap is padded to offer protection to the tripod head, the rest of the bag is unpadded
  • Full length zipper
  • Bag is slightly tapered to provide a better fit for a tripod with the head attached. The wider end of the bag accommodates the head without requiring all levers to be removed
  • Carried by the attached shoulder strap
  • Compatible with Manfrotto tripod with head up to 27″ long
  • Water repellent fabric is specially treated to resist moisture

The Pasco Bulldog XC Invite had a crowded field of runners with 347 high school and 40 middle school runners crossing the finish line. Pasco High did well handling the overflow crowds due to Sunfair being moved from the same weekend to the next due to wildfire smoke creating poor air quality in Yakima.

Kamiakin, who I am sure many of the schools here wish had been able to go to Sunfair, dominated both the boys and girls races with scores of 50 and 28 respectively. The boys’ score of 50 may not seem as strong as normal except that the top 6 Kamiakin runners sat out the race to prepare for the big race next week against nationally-ranked North Central (who also did not run this weekend) at the Richland Invite. It was great to see these boys, our 2nd string, get a chance to run a varsity race. The last couple years, when my boys were usually runners 7, 8,or 9 I could only create paper races to prove how strong our 2nd string could run. Hopefully next week they will run in the Division 2 Varsity race against North Central’s 2nd string.

We had our first league meet this past Tuesday after it was cancelled due to smoke last week. With only 4 races I thought I would have them done quickly but I had a number of other things going on this week including a regional photography conference that I had volunteered to help.

Kamiakin JV Dominates the Field

The Kamiakin boys dominated the both the Varsity and JV races. On the varsity side they placed five in the top ten, led by Ahmed Ibrahim (15:44.5) who finished half a second behind Richland’s Michael Williams (15:44.0). Nine of the top ten JV runners were wearing Kamiakin red led by sophmores Cameron Glade (16:51.9) and Jonathan Lafferty (17:03.4).

Lindsey Bradley (18:18.8) led the Richland Bomber Girls Varsity to win all their matchups with four of the top 6 runners. Kamiakin’s Megan Beauchene (18:40.5) and Walla Walla’s Courtney Cox (19:08.8) were the only runners able to keep up with the Bombrers. On the JV side, the Kamiakin Braves placed six runners in the top nine led by freshman Kaylee Sanchez (21:57.0).
